Guardians of the Karst is a scientific and storytelling initiative dedicated to exploring, understanding, and protecting Dinaric Karst ecosystems before they are lost.

Beneath the surface of eastern Herzegovina lies one of Europe’s most extraordinary natural systems — a hidden world of disappearing rivers, underground networks, and unique life forms found nowhere else on Earth.

Proteus anguinus

A living system beneath the surface

The karst landscapes of Herzegovina are not empty geology.
They are living, interconnected systems.

Within them:

  • rivers flow through stone
  • caves host ancient and specialized species
  • surface and underground ecosystems depend on each other

Iconic species like the Proteus anguinus — a blind cave-dwelling amphibian — remind us how unique and irreplaceable these habitats are.

Nevesinje sinkhole

Where rivers vanish — and life begins

In the Dinaric Karst, rivers don’t always flow on the surface.
They disappear into the ground, travel through vast underground labyrinths, and re-emerge kilometers away.

These systems:

  • sustain rare and endemic species
  • regulate water for entire regions
  • preserve centuries of cultural and natural history

But they are also extremely vulnerable.

Hydropower development, pollution, and climate change are rapidly altering these delicate connections — often before they are fully understood.

Science meets storytelling

Guardians of the Karst brings together researchers, explorers, and local communities to document and protect these hidden ecosystems.

Our work focuses on:

  • Mapping underground water systems
  • Studying biodiversity using modern tools like eDNA
  • Documenting disappearing rivers and karst fields
  • Sharing stories that connect people to place

We believe that what remains unseen is often unprotected — and that science alone is not enough without awareness.

Rivers

If we lose the rivers, we lose more than water

These landscapes are disappearing — not always visibly, but irreversibly.

When a karst system is disrupted:

  • underground biodiversity collapses
  • water systems become unstable
  • cultural landscapes lose their meaning

Protecting the karst is not only about conservation.
It is about identity, heritage, and responsibility.

Because what is lost here cannot be recreated.
